Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrong. What is love according to Bible?
1 Corinthians 13:4-5:
There are four basic types of Love in bible. Those are:
- Eros – Sensual or Romantic Love
This kind of affection is meant to describe a healthy, sensual love between husbands and wives. Romance and physical attraction play a part in it. God gave us this kind of desire with the clear instruction to express it only within the bonds of marriage.
Bible verse says ““Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:18-20).”
2. Storge – Familial Love
This types of Love describes the love family members have for one another. This kind of love mostly happens naturally. A parent can’t help but love their child and a child’s bond to their parents happen without effort. It’s a special and unique kind of family love. Romans 12:10 presents an interesting combination of storge and philia in which Paul commands the church to practice familiar love within the church. In other words, we are to have that familiar love with our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Generally, this types of love is what mothers know best but isn’t talked about too much when we talk about love. It is the love of parents for children. It is described as the most natural of loves. Natural in that it’s present without corrosion. It’s emoted because we can’t help ourselves and it pays the least attention as to whether the person is worthy of love.
3. Philia: love of friends and equals
This Philia love is the love of friendship. In Greek, Philia means brotherly love and it originated from Aristotle’s ethics, but has been used in different contexts since.
This type of loveis the love between lovers when they’ve been together for a long time and are not so hot and bothered anymore. It’s also called brotherly love as in the city of Philadelphia. The city of brotherly love. Of course, it could be sisterly love and it is the accepting love of good friendship. This is the love that is good for your health. The touch of a loved one. The philia touch lowers blood pressure. People in loving relationships feel your love have few doctor visits, shorter hospital visits, have less pain, and have more positive emotions. All of these positive consequences of philia love, loving friendships make us more resilient when hard times come.
According to bible this type of love is between figures like David and Jonathan or even in John 13:35 — “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”
4. Agape love
The highest and most noble form of love is reserved for the love that God has for us. Agape, pronounced uh-GAH-pay, is what Jesus demonstrated on the cross for us by sacrificing his life and taking on the entire burden of sin for all mankind so that we could have life everlasting with Him in Heaven.
This kind of love is important in the process of forgiveness. Forgiveness is important to your health, because the inability to forgive is associated with anger and a number of health outcomes that are not very good. It is love that sets a very hard bar but it may be at the foundation for happiness and contentment.
Bible Verses says bout this type of Love “Greater love has no one than this that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
So this type of love is known by the greatest, unconditional, sacrificial love.
